UTHANDO – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PARTNER

Uthando is We Are Africa’s official community development partner. It is an internationally award winning Responsible Tourism Initiative and Non Profit Organisation that is linking Tourism and Community / Environmental Development in Cape Town. As part of the business model, Uthando offers visitors an opportunity to engage with inspiring and innovative community development projects in a manner that is truly authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to local communities.

Spend the morning with Uthando visiting these wonderful community projects:

Abalimi Bezekhaya “Farmers of Home” – an urban agricultural project engaging 5000 micro farmers who are growing organic vegetables in the dusty and sandy townships of Cape Town. The Mount Nelson Hotel obtains a portion of their vegetables from Abalimi on a weekly basis and infact have an “Abalimi Bezekhaya Salad” on the Planet Restaurant Menu.

Ekhaya Ekasi ‘Home in the Hood” – a multi purpose centre in the township which is helping to create economic opportunities, particularly for women, and combat the terrible effects of poverty through a number of programmes including literacy, education, skills development in arts and crafts, mobile photography and health & wellness. In addition, the centre has the unique feature of having the most amazing rooftop vegetable garden.

Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) – these homes caters for the needs of the elderly in the sprawling township of Khayelitsha. We will visit the NOAH centre to engage with the seniors and staff at NOAH. We Are Africa and the tribe donated to NOAH in 2015 and 2016, this is an excellent opportunity to see where the money went. The seniors love spending time with visitors, sharing stories, singing and dancing and generally sharing their incredible sense of humanity despite their history of discrimination and suffering during Apartheid.

We will also showcase some amazing and inspiring youth development projects like the Betterchoice Gumboots Dance Project and Ezakwantu Youth Development to participants on the tour.
