Bakkrans

Bakkrans

In the wild folds of the Cederberg Mountains, Bakkrans stands as a quiet testament to time, geology, and care.

Here, nature and history are inseparable. The rugged terrain once sheltered San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi pastoralists, later witnessing the movement of Boer trekkers and livestock. Yet despite centuries of passage, the land remained remarkably intact, its raw, elemental beauty preserved within the ancient Cape Fold Belt.

But preservation is never accidental.

Over the past six years, Bakkrans has been carefully restored through a philosophy of minimal impact and deep ecological respect. What began as a vision has become a practice: resisting intrusive development, embracing sustainable conservation, and working in collaboration with environmental custodians to protect the integrity of the landscape. Today, Bakkrans is more than a destination. It is a stewardship model in motion—one that now carries the responsibility of custodianship across 6,000 hectares of Cederberg wilderness.

To be chosen as the next generation custodians of this land is not an accolade. It is a commitment: to hold space for nature’s rhythm, to protect geological heritage formed over millions of years, and to ensure that what is fragile remains undisturbed.

The story here has only just begun.
